Mary’s mom told her, years ago, that when you can’t please anyone, you should just do what you want. It took me a while to realize how freaking genius that advice is. It’s right up there with Mary’s advice: If you don’t know what to do, don’t do anything.
We’re a flailing society. We thrash around shouting about our pain. We thrash around shouting about our emotions. We thrash around to remind everybody else we’re alive and have opinions. Look at me! Goddamn you, look at me! I have shit to say! I have vital junk to contribute to whatever it is we’re talking about so urgently.
It’s satisfying to do nothing. To stand there and think, Huh. That’s what you’re up to, huh? Good luck with that. And just get on with your day. Boundaries protect all of us. Let them stay there, eight circles out, displaying like furious birds.
When you don’t know what to do, don’t do anything. Try that shit out. It’s amazing. And you never get stuck in the insistent bullshit of other people. You don’t get sucked into random drama or temporary craziness. It’s even better than stillness. It’s like what I was telling you about karma. You are not karma’s instrument. So, get the fuck out of the way.
Why resist when you could step aside instead? Powerful people don’t engage in power struggles. Know why? ‘Cause they’re powerful.
